For years I have been searching for the perfect skin-care routine, between scrubbing, serums, moisturisers, peels, SPF really the list is endless. In all that time it never really occurred to me that we could be fighting the ageing battle from the inside too. Of course I knew that a good diet and plenty of water helps, but these little magic tablets really make a lot of sense. Collagen is one of the most plentiful and naturally occurring proteins present in your body. It is known as the “glue” that holds the body together. It accounts for more than 30% of the protein mass in the human organism and it is the main component of the most important tissue in your body – connective tissue. It is fibrous in nature, it connects and supports all your body’s tissues such as skin, ligature and cartilage and the organic component of bone. It also supports the internal organs and is even present in teeth. There are more than 29 sub-types of collagens that naturally occur in your body. The collagen present in your skin tissue is essential for the skin’s strength and elasticity. From your mid 20’s, your body’s own natural collagen production starts to decline at a rate of 1.0% – 1.7% per year and is not replenished. There is an even more pronounced decline around the age of menopause (Average 51yrs) due to the drop in oestrogen. Smoking also causes your collagen levels to decline at a quicker rate.
What can we do to combat this?? Well of course you should have a good skincare routine. But what is becoming much more apparent is the fact that you should be taking supplements. There are many types of collagen supplements on the market, more and more are appearing by the week, so please be discerning when choosing the product that you purchase. Many of the brands use bovine and equine collagen, this form of collagen is far too large for our bodies to process and will not be absorbed, so you are really wasting your time and more importantly money taking them. The collagen in MedColl is derived from fish, which amazingly has similar sized collagen cells so our body will process it and absorb it into our system sending it to where it is needed.
At the moment MedColl have only one product available but they have plans to launch a male version and possibly a menopausal version next year. There’s even talk of a skin brightening version, I imagine that would be mega successful in the Middle-East and Asia.
When I was chatting to Roz from MedColl I asked if we should be taking as many supplements as we are told we should and unsurprisingly she said no. One of her main points was that we should take supplements but from a good quality company. I always go to Nourish to get mine, never to the highly discounted stores, where the quality of supplements are just not good, it really does not matter that the second bottle only cost ¢1. We all need a good multi-vitamin, Omega 3/6/9/7, Calcium and Vitamin D (make sure that your calcium tablet has Vitamin D in it as your body can only absorb it when it’s present) You can also take Vitamin K in a separate tablet which will help your body absorb the calcium better. For post menopausal women you will need to up your calcium, Vit D and K2. Us men need a Zinc supplement also.
